Elden Ring may be a difficult game, with bosses that can wipe an unprepared player with the flick of their wrist, but it can’t be said that the game doesn’t provide players with a large arsenal of tricks to help with your quest in the lands between. If you’re looking to master Staggering in Elden Ring, this is the right guide for you.
How To Stagger In Elden Ring
Staggering happens when an enemy’s poise is broken by your attacks. Poise is a basic stat that both you and all enemies share. Your own poise is increased by wearing armor, as well as using certain incantations, consumables, and Ashes of War.
There are certain attacks and strategies that break poise especially well, staggering your enemies quickly. These special attacks are:
- Heavy Attacks are designed to break an enemy’s poise. By charging your heavy attack, you can do even more damage to an enemy’s poise and stagger them faster.
- Jumping Attacks are also great at breaking poise. Execute these by jumping up in the air and using the attack button as you come down on the enemy.
- Incredibly fast attacks, such as twin daggers, can also stagger enemies, but it is exceptionally harder to break an enemy’s poise this way.
Think of an enemy’s poise like an invisible status effect bar, like you get from the Bleed effect. No matter what method you use to stagger an enemy, remember that you need to continuously attack them to get the poise bar broken. If you stop hitting them, the buildup effect will eventually fall off.
If you want to stagger enemies consistently, be sure to pump up your strength stat and pick up some massive weapons, such as greatswords. The biggest weapons in the game do the most damage to an enemy’s poise, and some even increase your own, keeping you from being staggered during your heavy attacks.

Staggering does work against bosses in Elden Ring, but it can be a little hard to pull it off. The key to a successful stagger is to be aggressive, which can easily get you killed in any Elden Ring boss fight. Luckily, your summons can also stagger opponents. You can chain your attacks together with your summons or a co-op player.
