Bandai Namco, a prominent player in the global gaming industry, is bracing for strategic changes following the release of its financial results for the fiscal year’s third quarter. The company, headquartered in Tokyo, announced a mixed bag of figures, which have prompted discussions about the future direction of its game development.

According to the reports from Techraptor (thank you for translating the report), Bandai Namco’s sales for the period between October and December 2023 totaled 772,035 million yen, marking a 3.9% increase from the previous year. However, the operating profit substantially declined 26.3% year-on-year, resting at 78,282 million yen. The Digital Business segment, which includes games, experienced an 8.9% decrease in sales and a staggering 96.5% plummet in segment profit.

The financial performance was affected by the underperformance of a new online game, which failed to meet expectations. Notably, the Dragon Ball and One Piece mobile games maintained stability, while FromSoftware’s Armored Core VI: Fire of Rubicon proved popular. We reported on its popularity before, but it wasn’t enough to make a positive report. Overall sales of home video games declined year-on-year.

According to Techraptor’s translation, Bandai Namco has announced its intention to refocus game development on quality. They want to obtain an optimal title portfolio and strengthen overall development management. This shift towards emphasizing quality is expected through collaborative efforts with Bandai Namco Studios. The company also plans to conduct stricter screening of its games as part of reorganizing its development portfolio.

You can read the English version of the report, but it gives you less to go off of. Essentially, Bandai Namco has revised its full-year operating profit forecast downward by 34%. The company is also reviewing the titles in development as it prepares for the next medium-term business plan. This means some projects may be postponed or canceled, and we may see more layoffs.

Moreover, the release of Blue Protocol in Japan for PCs and consoles saw a lukewarm reception. This would make many think the game is the online title mentioned in the financial report. While the game is scheduled for a Western release later this year, Bandai Namco appears to be gearing up to make significant changes because of their projection.

For those turned off by all the numbers, this means that if Bandai doesn’t start seeing more success, they’ll make big moves. This means layoffs, canceling games, and restructuring for a different plan. We’ll have to wait and see where this goes, but Bandai is actively trying to improve revenue.
