Sometimes, you just want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and head somewhere a little more isolated. There’s nothing better than fresh greenery, a beautiful ocean, and relaxing amenities that will keep you relaxed throughout your stay. To that end, there are a number of PC games that allow users to explore and live out new adventures on islands.
There is an abundance of island games out there, varying from action to survival-horror, and everything in between. Here’s all the information you need to know about the best island games that are available on PC.
What are the best island games for PC?
Whether you want to fight zombies or live a peaceful life, the following is a list of the best island games currently available for PC.
Morrowind
Morrowind takes place on the island of Vvardenfell, in the province of Morrowind. Like the previous and future Elder Scrolls games, players are largely set free in the open world after a starting area. This free-form exploration allows players to tackle objectives and the mysteries of the island at their own pace. Because of how revolutionary this was at the time, Morrowind is regarded as one of the better TES games.
As players explore the island, they’ll become familiar with the monsters and allies that roam the land. Whether they take on the main story or follow their own path, there’s a lot to do in this PC gaming classic.
Oxenfree
For those who love atmospheric games with engaging and spooky stories, Oxenfree will likely be right up your alley. This game starts with the player and their group of friends taking a ferry to an island just off the coast of their hometown. What starts as a party on the beach quickly becomes a life-threatening mystery as the players encounter a terrible history.
This game has a way of capturing your attention and then playing with your emotions as you experience teen angst all over again. As you play throughout the story, your choices determine the main character’s story and background, awarding the player who paid attention throughout.
Far Cry 3
Far Cry 3 is regarded by some as the best in the series, and it’s admittedly a whole lot of fun to play. As an entitled rich guy named Jason Brody on vacation, you and your friends are captured by the local pirates. You’re forced to toughen up and learn new skills in order to help you save the island and rescue your friends.
There is an abundance of ways that you can tackle each new mission in the game, be it stealth or a full frontal attack. Much of the game feels varied and interesting, something that would be compared to future games to their discredit.
Dead Island
It’s hard to beat a good zombie game, and being stuck with them on an island ratchets the pressure all the way up. The player wakes up after a night of drinking too much to realize that the island resort they’re staying at has been completely taken over by zombies. It’s up to you to help the few remaining survivors escape the island and prevent this virus from spreading.
This game was really popular when it was first released over 12 years ago, and has spawned rumors of a sequel ever since. With Dead Island 2 supposed to release on April 28th, it won’t be taking place on an island as we know it. That means that Dead Island is the only game from the series that will take place on an island.
The Forest
The Forest starts with the player and their son flying on a plane over the ocean. Suddenly, there’s turbulence before the plane crash lands on an island on the ground and the player’s son is kidnapped from the wreckage. The rest of the game will see the player taking on the threats of the island while they try to unravel the mysteries and find their son.
This is a great game to play with friends, as you can build large bases and explore much faster if you have someone to watch your back. The many monsters and islanders that roam the island can come out of nowhere, so it’s best to make sure that you’re prepared.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
For those who want to find the perfect island to relax and live out a peaceful and creative time should turn to Animal Crossing: New Leaf. The latest adventure in the series puts players in the role of the head resident on the island, free to decorate it as they see fit. One of the other major appeals is that players will live amongst cute animal friends, who offer the player friendship while they play.
This is a great game with a huge community online. Through the game’s online features, you can find limitless designs and other players that will make your game that much better.
Cuphead
If you enjoy a more stylized arcade shooter, then the adventures of Cuphead and Mugman will be just what you’re looking for. This game takes place on the different islands of Inkwell Isle, where players are sent on a journey to capture souls for the devil after gambling their own away. This game mimics the style of old 1930s cartoons and characters, with a soundtrack you can’t help but love.
That being said, this game is uniquely challenging in a way that some players might not enjoy. However, once you become familiar with the shooting and learn the enemy’s attacks, you should have no issue defeating them.
