Kabaret is an upcoming single-player dark fantasy narrative video game by Malaysian indie game studio, Persona Theory Games. This game will allow players to discover the story behind the monsters of classic Southeast Asian myths and folklore.

Kabaret launched its demo version in 2021 and has received favorable reviews since then, thanks to its visual novel look and fascinating narrative gameplay. Recently, Kabaret released a new announcement trailer, highlighting its key features.

In Kabaret, players will take on the role of Jebat, a boy who was cursed into a monster. Jebat journeys into a mystical, violent, and unforgiving realm called the “Alam Bunian” where he was taken in by the charismatic owner of Kabaret, simply known as The Caretaker. Jebat is tasked with conducting tea ceremonies with the dwellers in an effort to find out how to break his curse. Each of the mythological creatures who visit the Kabaret is based on Southeast Asian legends and folklore.

Here are the key features of Kabaret, as revealed on its Steam page:

  • Explore Kabaret by interacting with more than 20 different Southeast Asian-inspired mythical creatures
  • Pave your own way through the 6 different endings, each with its own unique route
  • Perform tea ceremonies and get to know the dwellers of Kabaret
  • Take on a match in Guli and Congkak, our Southeast Asian-inspired minigames
  • Manage a stage performance and help to put on a dazzling show
  • Featuring sounds of Hello Universe and Sambasunda Indonesia

Kabaret boasts a beautiful hand-drawn stylized art, matched with a traditional musical soundtrack. It is a visual novel featuring dark fantasy folklore, traditional Southeast Asian games, tea brewing, musical gameplay, and multiple endings.

As of now, the exact release date of Kabaret is still unknown, but it is confirmed to launch for PC soon, with Xbox and PlayStation versions to follow. For now, you may add Kabaret to your Steam and Epic Games Store wishlist now to be alerted when it becomes available.
