Fortnite, the classic battle royale from developer and publisher Epic Games, has just released a new teaser officially announcing an upcoming Ranked mode. There were no further details about the system’s mechanics, modes, or release date. Ranked was announced in a brief tweet from the official Fortnite feed, which has an exclusive teaser with all of the tier icons:

The addition of Ranked will be a genuinely monumental shift in Fortnite. Firstly, it would help organize and define lobbies more effectively, assuming the feature will function properly.

Players who prefer to simply dip in for a casual match or two with their friends are likely to meet similarly skilled opponents. Following the early days of launch of course, once the try hards swiftly rise well out of reach. And those who enjoy teaming up for highly tactical matches and consistent victory, can finally test themselves against the best.

Battle royale is already a naturally competitive genre with mass player eliminations, but Fortnite has often felt like a more casual title, especially with the likes of building and playful IP crossovers. So, it may seem a little unexpected for Fortnite to encourage more competitive matches.

But Fortnite still has the proper foundation for it, and hopefully the new Ranked system will give players more freedom to have the experience they prefer.

It can be very challenging for devs to deliver a successful matchmaking experience, which has troubled a lot of Fortnite’s competitors. Apex Legends, another FTP battle royale, remains consistently broken after years of skill-based matchmaking.

Also, Fortnite will need to offer a reasonable system for players to rank up or down, and that also requires meticulous balancing. However, Fortnite has reliably implemented totally new modes and concepts, so hopefully Ranked will be equally successful.
