Amnesia: The Bunker, an upcoming first-person horror indie from developer and publisher Frictional Games, has just released ten full minutes of gameplay in a new showcase today. The footage basically reveals all of the core mechanics and atmosphere, including moody music, lore, unique tools and interactions.
Amnesia: The Bunker is slated to launch on May 23rd, 2023. It will be available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. You can watch the full gameplay showcase on the Frictional Games YouTube channel:
Amnesia: The Bunker was originally expected to launch last March until it was delayed for polishing, and it seems the wait will be worthwhile. Today’s footage is methodical, creepy, and immersive, making very creative use of its WWI setting.
The rustic visuals are naturally unnerving, as each environment feels like it’s falling apart, isolated, and dangerous. The game looks every bit as tense as its predecessors, and those sound effects are truly something special. There seems to be a constant sense of vulnerability and desperation. The developers recently teased that resources will be scarce:
Amnesia: The Bunker previously released a few small gameplay trailers, such as the Monster Encounter teaser, that hint at larger threats and probably did more than enough to win over longtime fans of the series and newcomers who enjoy the genre.
Ten minutes feels a little lengthy for a horror game that’s fueled by mystery. Fortunately, today’s gameplay is also surprisingly careful not to reveal too much. The pacing is just right, allowing viewers to really invest without losing intrigue.
It’s always satisfying when a horror game can simultaneously make you want to flee as you explore, and Amnesia: The Bunker wields the entire environment to accomplish exactly that.
