Developer Jerk Gustafsson of MachineGames has revealed that a genuine historical mystery inspires the main narrative. Set between the cinematic classics Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, the game plunges players into 1937 as Indy chases the secrets of a curious phenomenon known as the Great Circle. It’s an interesting mystery that is bound to have some conspiracies.
This “great circle” is not Earth’s equator. Instead, it’s a circle that traces a path connecting renowned historical sites. According to an interview with the developer, its unexplained significance forms the crux of the game’s intrigue, offering a fresh canvas for globetrotting escapades and archaeological thrills. Gustafsson emphasizes a commitment to authenticity, assuring players that the story organically fits within Indy’s established timeline and character arc.
“It turns out there is a very real and mysterious great circle that is not the equator, but one that connects many of history’s greatest historical sites such as Giza, Easter Island, Sukhothai, Nazca, and many more. Their connection has remained a mystery, and this provides the perfect adventure for our game.”

For those who don’t know, ancient sites like Easter Island, Nazca lines, Ollantaytambo, Paratoari, Tassili n’Ajjer, and the Pyramids of Giza are supposedly connected by a large circle. The theory says they’re connected because they’re roughly situated along a single great circle trajectory, suggesting shared knowledge or cultural exchange. Some critics, however, point to potential inaccuracies in measurements and other great circles that could connect these diverse locations by chance.
This is a great theory to base the game on, especially for who Indy is then. Gustafsson describes a period of post-Marion solitude for Indiana Jones, adrift in archaeological obsession, ready to be sucked in by the Great Circle’s mysteries.
Gameplay-wise, this is a grounded experience that mirrors Indy’s resourcefulness. He is not superhuman by any stretch of the imagination here. He needs to overcome obstacles through sweat, grit, and improvisation. So players can use whip-cracking disarms, combat with clay jars, and scale ledges realistically.
Even with the focus on keeping Indiana Jones human, the whip is returning. The team also wants the whip to be as accurate as it is versatile. From swinging across chasms to disarming trigger-happy goons, the use will be realistic. To be honest, this all sounds even better than the trailer made it look. Whenever Indiana Jones leaves out the sci-fi, he’s at his best. As for how accurate this story is, we’ll have to wait and see.
