Doomblade, a 2D action metroidvania from developer Muro Studios and publisher Iceberg Interactive, will officially launch later this month on May 31st, 2023. Today’s new gameplay trailer sets up the basic premise, reveals a powerful sentient weapon, dangerous Dread Lords and underground worlds.
Doomblade will be available on PC via Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store. You can watch the new release date trailer on Iceberg Interactive’s YouTube channel:
Doomblade absolutely nails the attitude fans will enjoy, with shadowy worlds and characters that feel like an abstract collage that defines the genre in full. The relentless, gritty soundtrack certainly helps.
There is also a painter’s touch in all of the visuals, with meticulous lighting, effects, and environmental minutiae that give you something new to discover in every scene. Simply exploring in Doomblade would be a worthwhile experience. The stages seem to have as much variety as the enemies. Other titles can often feel too tethered to genre expectations.
The novelty of a sentient weapon companion sounds very fun, so it would’ve been nice if the trailer teased more about how that relationship would apply to the actual gameplay.
For now, the mechanics that have been revealed are pretty straightforward. But they also look impressively smooth, from movement to combat. The dashing, spinning, and barrage of effects never become a mess.
It’s a shame that this game won’t be available on all major platforms, but hopefully there will be ports later on. Muro Studios is the team behind Shadow Bug, which did end up on the Nintendo Switch with an expansive Limited Edition. Hopefully, Doomblade will get the same treatment, since it would surely succeed with a wider audience and the mobility of the Nintendo Switch.
