Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game, an upcoming asymmetrical horror game inspired by the 80’s cult movie, has released a new trailer featuring the AI “Lackeys”, which introduce PvPvE gameplay to the genre.
Developer Teravision Games and publisher Good Shepherd Entertainment currently plan to release the game in early 2023 on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. It’s available to wishlist on Steam now. You can watch today’s new teaser here:
The new teaser is presented with the film grain of an old school movie trailer, but it also doubles as a winking advertisement for those who want to play as the Klowns.
This is a good indication that the artistic teams probably understand the appeal of the source material. The oddball ridiculousness of Killer Klowns from Outer Space is an essential ingredient. So, tone is going to be key with this game, if it wants to compete in the asymmetrical horror genre.
Asymmetrical horror has quickly become a crowded and growing genre, with many titles that have original or much larger IP. Even Dragon Ball Z entered the genre with Breakers, including classic villains like Frieza.
The Lackeys are an interesting addition, even if their mechanism is pretty simple and familiar from other genres. According to the new trailer’s description, Lackeys latch onto humans to hold them in place, raise alarms, and “deliver freshly-cocooned citizens”.
It isn’t entirely clear how Klowns will be able to employ Lackeys. Even if they are AI, it would be great if they needed to be managed or directed in some way to increase strategy. At the very least, there should probably be some kind of cooldown system. Hopefully, the Lackeys will be properly balanced, because it sounds like the AI could easily get out of hand as an automatic feature.
