Until Then, a narrative mystery and adventure indie from Polychroma Games, is officially getting the support of publisher Modus Games to reach PC and Consoles. Further, a first-look at the game will be available at this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC), beginning March 22nd. Here’s the big announcement from Modus Games’ official Twitter feed:
Until Then was first revealed as far back as 2020 with a surprisingly haunting trailer, aiming for a 2021 release on Switch and PC. The teaser does show off some gameplay, but it is subdued in just the right way to create a tense mystery. You can review the full reveal on Polychroma Games’ YouTube channel here:
This teaser uses the mundane and conventional, alongside a quiet and rhythmic soundtrack, to let something strange disrupt expectations. Simple in-game text messages and news posts are used very effectively in this way.
The art design is also a perfect fit for this kind of psychological tone, which seems to toy with your senses. Watching the teaser, you’ll probably find yourself just as distracted by the fictional feed on the in-game phone as the character.
Further, the crisp clarity of the phone feed doesn’t seem to match the rest of the environment’s art style, which can’t be unintentional. It’s clear that the devs are really aiming for some complex themes, and so far, it has a very imaginative approach. There should be some very interesting drama.
Hopefully, the first look coming to 2023’s GDC will reveal a little more gameplay that involves some player interaction. The world established by the devs, in such a brief time, hints at a lot of opportunities for unique gameplay and storytelling mechanics.
At this time, publisher Modus Games is probably best known for their work on God of Rock and Afterimage, but previous titles like Remothered have also made a good impression.
