Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe, an upcoming remake of the beloved platformer from 2011, will officially introduce even more copy abilities: sand manipulation and the “Festival” ability from the more recent sequel Kirby Star Allies.
Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe launches exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on February 24th, 2023. Here’s the full thread from Nintendo of America, which features images of the upcoming Sand ability:
Since Kirby’s Return to Dream Land was released over a decade ago, the remake hardly needed many new incentives for longtime fans to revisit the game on Switch.
However, the new Sand ability looks like a very creative addition, with all of the flexibility and humor that fans have come to expect. Players will definitely be able to find some clever new solutions and tricks this way. Fan responses have been largely positive, including a healthy dose of “pocket sand” and Star Wars references.
Naturally, it’s always a delight to see returning abilities, since the Kirby franchise has been so extensive. So, the nod to Kirby Star Allies is fun too, even if it would have been a great opportunity for older or more popular titles to get some love.
Kirby’s Return to Dream Land struggled to effectively implement multiplayer well. Adding multiplayer to the Kirby series certainly made for some fun controlled chaos, but it tended to compromise the challenge. So, hopefully the remake will fix up some of those balancing issues.
Kirby’s franchise continues to go strong, following last year’s Dream Buffet. That game may have irritated some critics, for not offering much more than the overview trailer promised, but it was a joyful party game and a tremendously adorable alternative to the likes of Fall Guys.
