The Silent Swan, an upcoming indie and open world narrative from developer Praenaris and publisher Gammera Nest, will officially launch in 2023 with a physical release on PlayStation 5. The physical edition will be handled by Selecta Play, and there is no word on physical releases for other platforms.
The Silent Swan doesn’t have an exact release date yet, but it’s still expected this year. In addition to PlayStation, it will also be available on PC via Steam. Today’s announcement was accompanied by a new physical edition trailer, which you can watch on the Gammera Nest YouTube channel:
The Silent Swan is definitely an indie that will benefit from any kind of next-gen release, since the point of the gameplay loop is pure immersion. Players will spend most of their time exploring an extensive open world, in search of unfolding more narrative, which is driven by mystery.
PlayStation 5 tech, such as haptic feedback and improved graphics, should help create more intrigue. It would be nice to see titles like to be ported for VR, such as the PS VR2.
Today’s trailer shows off a lot of gorgeous scenery, but since mystery is at the root of the premise, it remains relatively vague. Even the in-game environments are deliberately filled with fog and an overwhelming solemn tone.
Fortunately, the Steam page explains the premise, where the protagonist searches for his vanished wife by seeking out paper swans as clues. There’s also an unnamed “calamity”, and there does seem to be a sense of devastation in today’s trailer.
Also, a key feature of The Silent Swan is that players can explore literally everything, and there will be “quicycles” to help with map traversal. Although The Silent Swan certainly feels like an indie, it’s still fairly ambitious.
