Passing By – A Tailwind Journey, an upcoming puzzle and adventure indie from developer Studio Windsocke and publisher Dear Villagers, has just been revealed with a new trailer. Naturally, a release window has not been confirmed yet, but it will be available on PC. You can watch the full announcement trailer on the official Dear Villagers YouTube channel here:
Although the teaser is very brief, the art design and music are full of youthful charm. The handcrafted look of the environments, objects, and characters help create a cozy atmosphere. The teaser also begins quietly, which is unusual, but it lets sound effects set the mood.
Passing By – A Tailwind Journey almost feels like a very relaxed version of FAR: Changing Tides, with a central vessel to tend to along your adventure. Notably, the teaser does not set any kind of expectation for puzzles, but Passing By – A Tailwind Journey will definitely have them according to the official Steam page.
In fact, Passing By – A Tailwind Journey will actually involve more survival mechanics than the teaser implies. Despite the freedom to explore at your own pace, players need to manage resources to stay afloat. And each island that you explore is filled with its own unique puzzles. However, there is also an emphasis on “wholesome encounters”.
Hopefully, the devs have found a way to neatly balance these two aspects of the story. If the puzzles are undemanding, the volume of casual exploration could disappoint some.
Either way, Passing By – A Tailwind Journey’s world is the perfect setting to accommodate both. So, it does look like the game will deliver the best of both tones. It’ll be best to reserve judgement until more gameplay makes things a little clearer, but this looks very special.
