Independent developer Diego Ras has entered the scene with Racoo Venture, a 3D platformer built entirely by his own hands. This is a huge game and has made it to major consoles, which isn’t something that normally comes to solo developers. This feat in itself places Racoo Venture alongside other greats, but it hasn’t been an easy ride for him.

According to Xbox Wire, Ras’ journey began a world away from the flashy consoles his game now graces. Growing up in Brazil, his exposure to technology and gaming arrived later than most, with his first console experience at eight years old and first computer at 21. Despite this unconventional start, a passion for game design simmered within him.

After years of working in advertising, Ras craved a different pace and purpose. He embarked on a new path, freelancing while dedicating his spare time to Racoo Venture. This ambitious project drew heavily from his creative and design background, even utilizing his technical knowledge from past studies. However, the solo path meant sacrifice. Strict budgeting and financial juggling became the norm, pushing Ras to utilize his reserves and seek loans.

Even his father, a staunch supporter, provided financial aid despite battling cancer during this period. Ras’ choice of genre and character wasn’t random. He yearned for the charm of classic, colorful platformers, wanting to reclaim the raccoon from its villainous stereotype and cast it as a cuddly hero. Yet, the most time-consuming aspect wasn’t graphics or animation but level design. Striking the perfect balance between challenge and progression was paramount for Ras.

Fueled by determination and countless lessons learned, five years of tireless dedication culminated in Racoo Venture’s release. This accomplishment wasn’t just a personal victory for Ras but a tribute to his late father, who passed away before seeing the finished product.

Losing a parent before they get to see you reach success is terrifying for many but a reality a lot of people see. Racoo Venture is coming to Xbox, and Diego sharing his story is a really cool thing, but this kind of game is one of those inspirations that others can use to make their games. Hopefully, solo dev success won’t remain as elusive as it’s been.
