Roblox is introducing real-time translation for in-experience text chat in a major update to break down language barriers. Players of different languages can now communicate seamlessly, with messages automatically translated directly within the platform.

The new feature leverages a custom-built multilingual translation model trained on a massive text and translation data dataset, including Roblox-specific content and popular chat phrases. This allows the system to handle any combination of the 16 languages supported by Roblox, with a latency of around 100 milliseconds for near-instantaneous translation.

The update addresses a long-standing challenge for the platform, where language barriers could limit interaction and collaboration between players from different regions. It’s expected to boost engagement and improve the overall experience for users worldwide.

“Thanks to our new real-time AI chat translations, we’ve made possible on Roblox something that isn’t even possible in the physical world – enabling people who speak different languages to communicate seamlessly with one another.”

Roblox Blog Post

The post is long, but we’ve knocked it down to the key features that will be introduced:

  • Real-time translation: Messages are translated instantly, with minimal latency for uninterrupted conversations.
  • Multilingual support: Handles all 16 languages currently supported by Roblox, including less common language pairs.
  • Roblox-specific language: Trained on data that includes slang, abbreviations, and other terms commonly used within the platform.
  • Messages are filtered through moderation: Integrated with Roblox’s existing trust and safety measures to ensure translated text adheres to community guidelines.

Looking ahead, Roblox plans to improve translation accuracy further by allowing users to provide feedback and suggest better translations. Additionally, the company is exploring expanding language support and venturing into automatic translation of other elements like voice chat and in-experience visuals.

It’s honestly really cool to learn about. If you have the time to read the whole post, you should. Roblox is really pushing barriers.
