It’s been a big 12 months for Sonic fans, with the release of Sonic Frontiers and April Fools’ The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, and it seems SEGA still has more planned. According to a Japanese trademark tracking website, SEGA has applied for two different trademarks for something called “Sonic & Friends,” hinting at a new project seemingly in development.
According to a tweet reporting on the findings of the website Chizai Watch, SEGA has filed two different patents for Sonic & Friends. One is for the larger property that was applied for on June 23, and the logo in the tweet below was applied for on July 18. Not much else is known about the project other than the small image of Sonic we’re given.
It’s unclear what this new project could be, with fans guessing everything from a series of animated shorts to a sequel to any number of classic Sonic games. Filing a trademark for a property is usually a pretty early step, so it could be a while before fans of the blue hedgehog will know for sure what this project entails. With the number of genres he’s now crossed, nothing seems unlikely for Sonic & Friends.
Until then, fans have plenty of new Sonic content to look forward to with the launch of Sonic Superstars sometime this fall. SEGA only announced that title a few months ago, so it seems likely that the company won’t announce whatever Sonic & Friends is until we get closer to its release.
