SEGA has unveiled its latest installment in the Sonic universe, Sonic Superstars. The game will be available for multiple platforms, including PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC. While the base game is priced at $59.99, details about additional packages and future content are yet to be announced, with a launch anticipated for this fall.
Sonic Superstars invites players to an all-new adventure in the enigmatic Northstar Islands, offering an innovative approach to the traditional 2D Sonic high-speed action platforming. Players can choose from popular characters such as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose, each empowered with all-new Emerald powers that offer dynamic new ways to move and attack. The game encourages players to explore stunning, never-before-seen environments either alone or alongside up to three other players, in a quest to thwart Dr. Eggman, Fang, and a mysterious new enemy from converting the islands’ giant animals into Badniks.
The game is designed to be a fresh take on the classic Sonic experience. It combines the familiar 2D Sonic high-speed side-scrolling action with fully 3D graphics, new powers and abilities, and novel gameplay options. The setting is the all-new Northstar Islands, marking a fresh context for the Sonic narrative.
In Sonic Superstars, players can choose their character from favorites including Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose. Each character comes with unique abilities that can be leveraged to navigate the Northstar Islands and defeat the antagonist, Dr. Eggman, who has joined forces with Fang, a character from Sonic’s past.
A key aspect of the game involves the Chaos Emeralds, which endow players with extraordinary abilities such as multiplication, waterfall ascension, and form changing. These added powers promise to enrich the gaming experience and introduce a new dimension to the gameplay.
In a first for the Sonic franchise, Sonic Superstars introduces a cooperative play feature. The game allows up to four players to participate in the entire campaign together, with a drop-in and drop-out system designed to accommodate local cooperative play.
