Tower of Fantasy has put forth an official response to cheaters that have undermined the game, stating that cheaters and hackers will suffer a 10-year ban from the game. The devs have also invited players to report related behavior, and further stated that they will “continue to refine” anti-cheating defenses.
Here’s the full statement from Tower of Fantasy‘s Twitter feed, which has received a lot of praise for its tough approach to malicious accounts:
Fans of the popular MMORPG were greatly relieved to hear that Tower of Fantasy will also be removing all of the currently suspended accounts from Ranked after the 1.5 version update. Further, they also plan to distribute compensation to players once the solution is complete, according to an elaboration on the devs’ full blog post.
There’s no question that Tower of Fantasy has taken the ideal approach to hacking issues. Many Free-to-Play games suffer from severe cheating issues that disrupt gameplay.
But many other devs, such as those handling the FTP shooter Apex Legends, simply haven’t dedicated the right effort. In fact, countless innocent players were banned at one point, and hackers continue to be a serious problem there. Left unchecked, these problems fester and could even enter professional tournaments.
So, while a 10-year ban is unusually long for any title, these drastic measures might deter people from cheating in advance. Some fans have seemed frustrated that a new plan was not stated outright, suggesting that fans alone won’t be enough to counter cheaters.
And that’s true, for most games. However, the devs (naturally) cannot signal their new methods. With at least 3,371 accounts banned as of today, whatever Tower of Fantasy is doing appears to be working. Hopefully, the devs continue to implement the same level of dedication.
