The closed Beta for Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, a computer role-playing game (cRPG) set in the far future of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, begins today, Owlcat Games has revealed. Accompanying this announcement is a new trailer showcasing the critical role players’ decisions will have in shaping the course of events.
Starting from this day, all early founders who have pre-purchased any version of the game are given the ability to download and play the Beta.
The Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader closed Beta dramatically augments the volume of accessible content for players, featuring the prologue and the first three chapters of the game. Adventurers venturing into the Koronus Expanse can expect 60-80 hours of thrilling quests and encounters with new allies and adversaries. This version also gives an insight into the game’s inception.
Players will experience the game from its inception, earning the title of Lord Captain in the Prologue and Act I, advancing through Act II (highlighted in the closed Alpha), and ultimately embarking into the shadowy city of Commorragh, the eerie stronghold of the sinister Drukhari, in Act III.
The closed Beta for Rogue Trader extends the roster of trustworthy companions. Ulfar, a formidable Adeptus Astartes from the Space Wolves chapter, will ally with the player to vanquish foes in the name of the Emperor.
Furthermore, the Beta offers an in-depth character creation mechanism, featuring a vast range of options to create a visually and mechanically distinctive Rogue Trader. This feature, however, is still under development. The game’s character progression system has also been substantially revamped, incorporating new talents and abilities along with a new doctrine and alterations in the rest. Unique to this version are a distinctive progression tree for the navigator and the much-awaited opportunity to play as a psyker for the main character.
The Beta provides a preview of the Convictions system, where important decisions made during the Lord Captain’s adventures result in lasting repercussions referred to as Convictions in the full version. Characters will accrue points towards Imperialis, Benevolentia, or Hereticus, thereby unlocking new perks and dialogue options.
Space combat mechanics have been significantly updated in the closed Beta, including new space backgrounds, shield UI, combat grid visuals, and a multitude of balance and gameplay enhancements. Colonization has also been substantially improved, featuring an upgraded user interface and numerous balance changes.
This sampling of updates represents only a fraction of what awaits players in the Beta.
The Beta version of the game will stay active until the release of Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, granting early access to anyone who pre-purchases any of the founder’s packs. Note, however, that in-game progress will not carry over from one version to another.
In Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, players embody a Rogue Trader, a descendant of an ancient lineage of audacious privateers, sanctioned by the Emperor Himself to govern their trade protectorate and explore the outskirts of Imperial space. With their Warrant of Trade, the Rogue Trader wields unimaginable privilege and power and the mandate to expand the Imperium’s borders. A mammoth voidship and countless personnel, ready to obey their leader unquestioningly, are at their disposal. Whether a Rogue Trader shows mercy or disdain, remains loyal to the Emperor or fraternizes with the enemies of Humanity, their every decision has the potential to impact entire star systems, altering the in-game world and its denizens.
The narrative unfolds in the Koronus Expanse, a hazardous and uncharted region on the farthest frontiers of the Imperium, where numerous explorers have ventured, never to return.
