Wild Hearts has finally given fans a clearer look at the setting, map traversal, hunting and other gameplay mechanics. The game is scheduled to release on February 17th, 2023. You can watch the full trailer on Wild Hearts’ official YouTube channel here:

The footage revealed today was still “a game in development”, as strategically noted by the trailer. However, it remained divisive nonetheless, as many Monster Hunter and Toukiden fans crossed their arms over the “staged” presentation and in-game combat.

It became immediately clear that the creatures in Wild Hearts aren’t quite as responsive as one would hope. At least for now, and with this hunt in particular. The creatures didn’t seem to react to devastating blows, aside from the innate progression of the hunt, such as losing a tusk or falling on its back.

Curious fans were also frustrated by the lack of weight in the attacks and weapons, a complaint that even some Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak players have raised. Some speculate the trailer weapons are simply quick, and they may not have as much weight anyway.

Either way, the Monster Hunter IP has consistently provided a satisfying weight to their movement and weapons in countless installments. Wild Hearts is a new contender, and expectations are high, so it’ll need to provide a lot more to compete.

Still, the creature design and music are definitely a highlight, and the construction of traps mid-hunt would be an interesting way to reward quick-thinking. Even if it is similar to Fortnite’s building, the traps and structures are influenced by attractive cultural references.

Another positive is the movement, which offers a variety of ways to traverse the world and engage with creatures. The setting looks expansive and gorgeous, with opportunities to explore with co-op. There’s still a lot to hope for in Wild Hearts.
