LEGO 2K Drive, the highly anticipated open racing game from developer Visual Concepts Entertainment and publisher 2K Games, has just released a new gameplay trailer. The new teaser was disguised as an adorable news broadcast, and includes details about Open World features like challenges or mini games. You can watch the full trailer on LEGO’s official YouTube channel here:
Today’s new trailer was a nice surprise, and elaborated a lot more than expected, since LEGO 2K Drive was only just revealed last week. It carries the same winking, bubbly sense of humor that fans expect from LEGO. But the news title also hints that there will be future episodes, and they do not include the phrase “trailer”, so it may be important to keep an eye on the broader LEGO YouTube channel.
Challenges are obligatory for any open world racing game. Aside from the actual racing, there needs to be an incentive for players to explore. Otherwise, LEGO 2K Drive in particular would lose its pacing and become too similar to other sandbox LEGO games.
Fortunately, the first challenge you get a peek of in this trailer really leans into the wacky side of LEGO’s inherent freedom. It appears that players will need to race their vehicle with a wild rocket strapped to it.
The mini games look promising too. The trailer revealed a combination of racing and golfing, which will probably inadvertently eclipse the likes of Turbo Golf Racing. It’s a nice touch of Rocket League and it’ll be interesting to see how LEGO 2K Drive expands on features like that.
Again, it’s encouraging to see that LEGO 2K Drive will emphasize racing mechanics. The game needs just enough rails to distinguish itself, without losing the breezy sense of flexibility.
