LEGO 2K Drive, an upcoming open world racing game from 2K games, has just released an official trailer featuring gameplay and exclusive in-game items.
This trailer follows the leaked announcement yesterday, which already revealed that LEGO 2K Drive would launch on May 19th, 2023. It will be available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and the Nintendo Switch. Here’s the full “awesome reveal trailer” from the Epic Games YouTube channel:
The marketing for LEGO 2K Drive uses the phrase “awesome” quite a bit, surely some careful marketing nods to The LEGO Movie. It would’ve been nice if all of the smaller reveals weren’t spoiled, but the new gameplay footage looks absolutely delightful.
Most LEGO games aim to deliver as much freedom as possible, to reflect the pure imagination of a traditional building experience. But that doesn’t always fit the racing genre, which has often struggled to combine open worlds with a sense of speed or progress.
Fortunately, the new trailer has blended a lot of the features that do work. Fans got a glimpse of the separate garage, where you’ll presumably build in a relaxing environment. Also, vehicles apparently have the ability to transform based on their surroundings, which should give players lots of flexibility. It’ll also prevent any loss of momentum in the open world.
While jokes like chickens crossing the road may be a little cheesy, most of the humor is adorable, and it’ll be delightful if the gameplay can keep that youthful playfulness. It should, with vehicle names like the Hamburghini, an Awesome Rivals Edition perk. Notably, it can also be purchased individually, so hopefully fans will be able to pick and choose the same way with other special content.
