Smalland: Survive the Wilds, an upcoming indie adventure game from developer and publisher Merge Games, has released a brief video revealing its central survival mechanics.
Smalland: Survive the Wilds is slated to launch into Early Access next week on March 29th, 2023. It will be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. You can watch the full “Fending for Yourself” teaser on the Merge Games YouTube channel here:
Smalland: Survive the Wilds has regularly released a series of short, explanatory videos for the last month. This included some pretty extensive gameplay, including the first five minutes in full. However, the mechanics behind the titular survival are crucial, so it’s nice to see the broader scope of these details.
This also continues to help distinguish Smalland: Survive the Wilds from comparable titles like Grounded. It turns out that managing an armor system will play a major role in the game. Requiring players to swap out these armor builds is a clever way to make the world feel even more alive.
In many games, armor is simply upgraded to improve general durability, or perhaps some elemental effect. But it’s linear, and makes most of your progress obsolete over time. Adapting to different weather, and not just enemies, is a very nice touch.
Today’s trailer also revealed that potions and food will also be suitable ways to survive. This will go a long way in encouraging a little more strategy than simply maxing out weaponry or a set of armor.
Given the large variety of creatures that were revealed in the “Creatures and Features” video earlier this month, the survival mechanics should become fairly elaborate. That complexity should be just ambitious enough to give Smalland: Survive the Wilds the kind of layers that fans of the genre are hoping for.
