In a recent PlayStation Blog post, Square Enix developers delved into the reimagining of two of Final Fantasy VII’s most iconic characters, Sephiroth and Aerith. This is specifically for the upcoming sequel, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Sephiroth, the one-winged antagonist, will take center stage in Rebirth, playing a more active role compared to his limited appearances in the original game and Remake. Producer Yoshinori Kitase promises a deeper portrayal, exploring Sephiroth’s complexities beyond his initial “haunting memory” presence. This expanded role is attributed to the story’s focus on the journey between Midgar and the Forgotten Capital, a section where Sephiroth was largely absent in the original.

The blog also highlights the evolution of Sephiroth’s visual design and combat mechanics. Kitase expressed excitement about the synergy system allowing Cloud and Sephiroth to fight side-by-side, showcasing Sephiroth’s abilities in a way not possible before. Creative Director Tetsuya Nomura emphasizes the character’s gradual transformation across various spin-off titles and Remake, culminating in this more nuanced portrayal in Rebirth.

Aerith’s fate, a pivotal and emotional moment in the original game, remains a central theme in Rebirth. Kitase remains tight-lipped about specifics but assures players of an “extra level of detail” in character portrayal that will evoke a “great breadth of emotion.” Really, we’re all wondering if she will die in this one.

“Aerith’s fate is one of the most important themes in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s story. I really want people to play the game and feel it directly, so I will not say too much here, but when comparing this scene to how it was presented in the original, I am confident that the audience will feel a great breadth of emotion from the extra level of detail in how the characters are portrayed.”

Balancing fan expectations with a fresh narrative is a key challenge for the development team. Kitase acknowledges the importance of respecting the original while introducing new elements like the “Whispers” to keep the story engaging. He believes this approach has already resonated with fans, evident in the anticipation surrounding Rebirth.

Nomura encourages players to experience the story firsthand rather than seeking spoilers, while Kitase invites everyone to witness how modern gamers react to Aerith’s fate, a moment that left a lasting impact on players 27 years ago. We really don’t know what that means, and to be honest, I really hope there’s a way to save her.
