Minecraft players often capture in-game moments using screenshots, and understanding where these images are saved is crucial. This article provides a comprehensive guide on locating Minecraft screenshots on different platforms and customizing the screenshot-taking process.

To take a screenshot in Minecraft, the F2 key is used by default (or Fn+F2 on Macs and some keyboards). These images are automatically saved in the .minecraft\screenshots folder. If the default key is unresponsive, players can customize the key binding through the “Options > Controls > Miscellaneous” menu.

Where to find Screenshots in Minecraft

In the Windows operating system, Minecraft saves screenshots in the AppData/Roaming folder, specifically in the .minecraft\screenshots directory. To quickly locate this folder, input %appdata%.minecraft\screenshots into the File Explorer address bar. For players using the Windows 10 Bedrock Edition, the game settings overlay can be accessed by pressing Win+G, selecting Game Capturing, and clicking the camera icon. Screenshots in this version are saved by default to C:\Users\<username>\Videos\Captures.

For macOS users, the screenshots are kept in ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/screenshots, while Linux users can find them in ~/.minecraft/screenshots. An alternative way to access the screenshots folder is by navigating to the Minecraft settings menu, choosing “Resource Packs,” clicking “Open resource pack folder,” and going up a level.

Screenshots are saved as .png files, using a naming format based on the current date and time: YYYY-MM-DD_HH.MM.SS.png. For instance, a screenshot taken on March 1, 2023, at 5:00:00 pm would be named “2023-03-01_05.00.00.png”. If multiple screenshots are saved within the same second, a revision number is appended to the file name.

Players can modify the in-game appearance of their screenshots using control keys. By default, the captured images resemble regular gameplay. The following control keys allow for further customization:

  • F1: Conceals heads-up display elements such as health bar, hunger bar, experience bar, held items, server chat, and player nametags in multiplayer mode.
  • F3: Reveals the debug screen, displaying coordinates, entity count, and other data. Press Shift+F3 to access the debug screen with additional debugging charts.
