Penny’s Big Breakaway, an upcoming colorful platforming adventure from Evening Star and Private Division, has just been announced with a new trailer. It features both cinematics and gameplay, setting up the basic premise, colorful world and enemies.

Although a release date was not confirmed, the trailer description has set a window for “early 2024”. The game will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and the Nintendo Switch. You can watch today’s new trailer on the Nintendo YouTube channel:

Penny’s Big Breakaway’s world looks positively adorable and dazzling, with a splashy art design and an escape plot that gives the platforming a fun theme.

The hero’s main tool looks pretty versatile in today’s trailer, allowing players to do everything from double jumping and swinging to wall-riding. There’s a constant sense of urgency and movement that hints at a breakneck pace more akin to Sonic than Mario. Today’s trailer feels like filling up on sugary cereal and watching a Saturday Morning cartoon.

It’s definitely family friendly, as usual for the brand. The basic premise about embarrassing your leader is totally silly, and even the enemies are generally very cute.

Although Penny’s Big Breakaway doesn’t exactly aim to revolutionize the genre, there look to be some pretty inventive stages with a good variety of obstacles. This gives the game an adventurous tone, full of exploration. The music helps in that way, too, full of upbeat thrills.

There seems to be a lot of nostalgia in this game, both in its fundamentals and details, including the hero and even small sound effects. But it still feels like a rush of breezy, cartoonish fun that should please fans of the genre.
