Stampede: Racing Royale, an upcoming kart game with 60-player races, battle events and more, will officially hold a Steam playtest from July 27th to July 31st, 2023.
Developed by Sumo Leamington and published by Secret Mode, Stampede: Racing Royale does not currently have a release date. However, the announcement trailer from last month hinted it would enter Early Access this year.
Stampede: Racing Royale will be available on PC via Steam, where you can wishlist the game now and request access for next week’s playtest. You can watch today’s new Steam Playtest trailer on the game’s official YouTube channel:
The Steam playtest will feature “an early, work-in-progress version”, with just a small selection of the upcoming tracks and features. A new post on Steam confirms there will be 8 race maps, 1 battle arena, and 55 cosmetics for three-round matches. The playtest will also support the full 60-player lobbies, where players try to avoid elimination.
The kart genre has become surprisingly varied, but many of these games rely on a very familiar IP, with very few twists on the actual gameplay mechanics.
For example, Disney Speedstorm is packed with childhood favorite characters from live-action and animation hits. But most of its novelty is in the hero abilities. At the very least, it’s expected to become free to play in September 2023. Elsewhere, the likes of Nickelodeon, Garfield, and Smurfs have all stumbled a bit.
Stampede: Racing Royale may not have familiar IP, but the basic battle royale premise should be quite refreshing. The sheer volume of the lobbies would be chaotic enough, but the battle events will add a party game attitude, almost akin to Fall Guys with karts.
The Steam playtest will reveal a lot about Stampede’s potential, and hopefully feedback gives the devs a better notion of the release window.
