Roniu’s Tale, an indie retro love letter that started out as an original and modern NES cartridge game, is officially getting ported to the Nintendo Switch for mainstream gamers. Roniu’s Tale held a fortunate Kickstarter campaign in 2021, so it’s been a long journey to the Switch.

An official release date has not been confirmed, but it’s currently available for the NES. Pre-orders are available now, according to a new tweet:

Developer Kunjee Studio had a very clear vision for this game, and that palpable enthusiasm definitely comes through in today’s trailer. Roniu’s Tale wasn’t just intended to be an homage, but a literal addition to the NES library. It’s a new hidden gem for a classic console.

That one surprising notion was enough to raise money from curious gamers. And it should absolutely spark some interest from Nintendo Switch users. The port should have no trouble with the translation.

Further, today’s trailer description notes that Roniu’s Tale will support NES Online controllers, so that players can still live out the proper experience. That plays a large role in the immersion, and generally fits better with classic NES titles.

Fortunately, Roniu’s Tale isn’t just a gimmick. The game has enough style to distinguish itself as a potential title from the era it’s emulating. Also, the creative top-down puzzles and their mechanics still appear to be mindful of modern gamers.

So, this would be a very accessible and inexpensive purchase for the Nintendo Switch. Roniu’s Tale is a rare opportunity to let modern gamers fall in love with classic gameplay, and that’s certainly a good thing. It would be a delight to see Kunjee Studio tread new ground following this fascinating port.
