Gangs of Sherwood, an upcoming action adventure inspired by Robin Hood lore from developer Appeal Studios and publisher Nacon, will officially launch on October 19th, 2023. It has also revealed nearly twenty full minutes of gameplay in a new showcase.
Gangs of Sherwood will be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. You can watch the new gameplay showcase on the Nacon YouTube channel:
Gangs of Sherwood has smartly emphasized cooperative gameplay, where Hood: Outlaws & Legends suffered by weirdly concentrating on competitive multiplayer.
Gangs of Sherwood also reveals just how much fantasy and goofiness it’s willing to indulge in today’s trailer. It does have a sense of swashbuckling fun, as opposed to anything too gritty.
However, it also has a lot of fantasy elements, as well as a somewhat cartoonish art design and tone. With floating machines, awkward banter, and arcade-style scoring on screen, this may not necessarily be the experience some had hoped for.
Despite the most recent Hollywood adaptations of the IP, which remain largely divisive, Robin Hood remains a beloved myth. And that’s likely due to the British adaptations on TV. So, it’d be nice to see iterations that felt a little closer to those.
There doesn’t seem to be too much ambition in Gangs of Sherwood, but its cooperative support should at least supply some breezy action with up to four friends. The graphics are fine, and the team has some distinguishable combat. That could be more than enough for most players. Also, the Steam page mentions that you’ll be rewarded for giving back to the people, which is a great touch.
