Skull Island: Rise of Kong, an upcoming third-person action and adventure game from IguanaBee and GameMill Entertainment, will officially launch in Fall 2023. A new gameplay trailer shows off combat as Kong explores Skull Island and battles its many threats to become king.
Skull Island: Rise of Kong will be available on PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. You can watch today’s new gameplay trailer on the GameMill Entertainment YouTube channel:
Today’s gameplay trailer is undoubtedly going to be divisive. It will frustrate fans of the iconic character that these graphics are likely to pale in comparison to the old school game based on Peter Jackson’s stunning film.
It may be a little early to judge too harshly. But there have already been many comparisons to The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which similarly relied heavily on beloved IP. And it ultimately suffered from terrible visuals, while failing to explore the mythology enough.
Visuals can often be overlooked for games that are conceptually sound. While it could be fun to roam around in Skull Island: Rise of Kong, and the pulpy action is similar to Kong: Skull Island, this is really missing an element of survival. The motivation for Kong is fine enough, but since they aren’t the king yet, it’d be nice if Skull Island felt wilder, larger, and more imposing.
There are some good intentions here, but the streamlined and cartoonish approach might have benefited from a mobile release instead. Skull Island: Rise of Kong seems like an unexpectedly friendly and breezy game, and the price tag might reflect that. There’s still plenty of time before launch, so hopefully new details will emerge.
