Badlands Crew, an upcoming vehicle builder and apocalyptic shooter from developer Runner Duck and publisher Curve Games, will officially launch in 2024 according to a new trailer. Players build and upgrade a battle wagon, manage a crew, and confront evil factions in the titular Badlands.
Badlands Crew will be available on PC via Steam, where you can wishlist the game now. Today’s announcement trailer features a combination of cinematics and gameplay. You can watch it on the Curve Games YouTube channel:
Badlands Crew flaunts its heavy influence from the Mad Max series, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that if executed well. The official Mad Max game from Avalanche Studios Group is a classic, to be sure. But Badlands Crew distinguishes itself with an arcade style, using cartoonish action that feels friendlier and possibly even more over-the-top.
For example, the giant desert worm in today’s trailer was definitely unexpected. It’s likely a reference to Dune, although Tremors would be more appropriate, given the B movie tone. Either way, indulging a fantasy setting outright opens the door to a lot of surprises that will further set Badlands Crew apart.
The worm looks neat, and a new official post on the Badlands Crew Steam page suggests it won’t be reserved for a splashy cinematic. In fact, giant sandworms will only be one of the environmental obstacles players get to contend with.
Badlands Crew has a terrific theme and smartly explores it with a combination of management and action. It looks like a natural evolution of Bomber Crew, a strategy sim that Runner Duck and Curve Games also collaborated on in 2017. Bomber Crew was highly successful, so it’ll be great to see its returning mechanics get expanded into something even more adventurous and interactive.
