Fate/Samurai Remnant, an upcoming action RPG set in 17th century Japan, developed and published by Koei Tecmo Games, has just released further key gameplay details in a lengthy PlayStation blog post. The post elaborates on “buddy actions” during combat, exploration and more.
Fate/Samurai Remnant is currently slated to launch on September 29th, 2023. It will be available on PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. You can watch the first trailer that was released last week on the Koei Tecmo YouTube channel:
There was an equal share of cinematics and gameplay in the first trailer, but it didn’t really showcase a lot of teamwork. There was a very brief glimpse of the hero getting a leg up for map traversal. It may be surprising to see that today’s PlayStation blog mostly clarifies how Iori and Saber can work together, which is actually a central mechanic.
Throughout the game, they can battle and explore together to build an Affinity Gauge, which then allows players to use Affinity Technique combos. Players can call for Saber’s help, and Saber will even signal on their own to provide Link Strikes.
This is a clever way to balance out each hero’s involvement. Reserving help to get you out of a tough situation will ensure that players can still feel heroic throughout the story without losing the personal relationship of the characters. It also encourages players to get creative with the way they switch between controlling master and servant, beyond the obviousness of their unique water and fire abilities.
Today’s blog also revealed the “Crimson Codex”, a source of general gameplay knowledge so that players can easily reference complex terms or navigate the world. That will definitely make the game more accessible, especially for those unfamiliar with Japanese culture, which is undoubtedly a highlight of Fate/Samurai Remnant.
