Gothic Classic, the classic version of early thousands action RPG Gothic 1, has released a new trailer revealing it will be ported to the Nintendo Switch. A new official blog post reveals that the port will include a variety of fixes for AI, story and more. It will also add new improvements, such as native gamepad UI and friendly NPCs that defend themselves.
The Gothic Classic Switch port is slated to launch on September 28th, 2023, according to a new press release. The game originally launched in 2001 and is available now on PC, including Steam. You can watch today’s Switch announcement trailer on publisher THQ Nordic’s YouTube channel:
THQ Nordic also has an outright remake of Gothic 1 up their sleeve, which was announced years ago but hasn’t revealed too much. Most recently, the official podcast about the remake released episode 2 a couple of weeks ago in July. Gothic 1 still has a solid fanbase, and the remake will do wonders for renewing interest. But Gothic Classic offers up a smooth way to enjoy your nostalgia.
Gothic 1 focuses on war in the kingdom of Myrtana, where humans desperately mine ore to defend themselves from an Orc invasion. It’s a fairly casual and accessible RPG. And although it’s getting spruced up for the port, the visuals have intentionally remained dated, so you wouldn’t be missing out on too many details. These features make it ideal for mobile gameplay on the Nintendo Switch.
Gothic 1 has an expansive story and a lived-in world, even by today’s standards. It inspired many elements that the genre still enjoys today. Hopefully, this Switch port signals that announcements for other ports, or perhaps updates on the remake, are coming soon.
