Testament: The Order of High Human, an upcoming metroidvania and action RPG from developer and publisher Fairyship Games, has just revealed an official gameplay trailer.
Testament: The Order of High Human doesn’t have a concrete release date yet, but it’s “coming soon”. It will be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as current and last-gen PlayStation or Xbox consoles. You can watch the official reveal trailer on IGN’s YouTube channel:
Testament: The Order of High Human’s biggest hook is the metroidvania element, so today’s official trailer probably doesn’t do the game justice. The newly revealed gameplay and cinematics look awfully generic, scraping the surface of the potential lore and mechanics. Sadly, the graphics and performances just don’t seem very satisfying either.
Fans are already drawing obvious comparisons to the likes of Avowed and Skyrim. But Testament: The Order of High Human’s official Steam page does mention puzzle and platforming. These mechanics could really help the game distinguish itself in the busy dark fantasy genre, which is already dominated by massive AAA titles from highly decorated devs.
More specifically, it will be interesting to see how the first-person magical combat will fit alongside the metroidvania side of the game. If there’s enough synergy, then map traversal could be very compelling.
Some of the art design does look promising. Most of today’s revealed characters fit the genre without feeling too plain, and it’s the environments that truly stand out. The new trailer shows off a couple of different settings, each with unique architecture and a fair sense of history.
They also appear to be pretty expansive. Fans of the genre enjoy exploring every nook and cranny of their dark fantasy worlds, and the mythology seems open-ended enough to support that.
