It’s hard to overstate how central the Call of Duty series has become to gaming, cementing itself as the top FPS shooter franchise in the last couple of decades. That domination seems to continue, as a new financial report from Activision Blizzard states that the COD series has over 90 million active players across its games every single month.
The financial report states that, with Call of Duty reaching its two-decade anniversary in a few months, the franchise currently has “around 90 million monthly players, with over half of all engagement on the mobile platform.” That means that the primary way 45 million people play CoD is through a phone, tablet, or other wireless device.
Call of Duty Mobile engagement and net bookings were stable year-over-year, with the team continuing to see a positive response to enhancements to the player experience and optimization of live operations. Lifetime worldwide consumer spending on Call of Duty Mobile since its October 2019 launch passed $3 billion in the second quarter.
Call of Duty approaches its 20-year anniversary in October with around 90 million monthly players, with over half of all engagement on the mobile platform. Activision’s teams are hard at work on major new installments in the franchise slated for the fourth quarter. Development of this year’s full annual premium release on PC and console is proceeding well. Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile™, an ambitious, internally developed mobile game tightly integrated with the PC and console experience, continues to progress through regional testing.
The financial report from Activision, specifically, gives more details about CoD‘s success, stating that Call of Duty Mobile has proven to be stable in engagement in sales over the last few years. Consumer spending since the game’s launch in October 2019 has passed over $3 billion in the second quarter of this year.
The developer also states that Activision’s segment revenue grew 17 percent in the last quarter, with the company’s operating income increasing by over 80 percent. Activision clearly attributes this success to the Call of Duty franchise, which has cemented the developer in the public eye for a while now. With the developer releasing a new title nearly every year, it makes sense it would make the company.
There is less focus on Modern Warfare II in the earnings report, with only one mention in the report stating that Season Three of the title has been the highest-earning so far.
