Activision clarifies Call of Duty SMS rules for PC and Console players

Modern Warfare II will only demand phone numbers from PC players, following Overwatch 2's divisive launch.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II will officially require a text-enabled mobile phone number to play the game on PC. The SMS rules will be the same as Call of Duty: Warzone’s regulation that was added in May 2020. So, console players will not be affected, unlike Overwatch 2.

Activision’s official anti-cheat blog post covers the matter in full, but Call of Duty enthusiast and reporter @charlieINTEL grabbed a screenshot of the SMS passage for review:

The phone number requirement for Overwatch 2 was considered by many to be a stunning disaster. It was quickly received with almost unanimous backlash. The requirement ultimately caused serious headaches for families, newcomers, and players with unique phone plans that conflicted with the system.

Many fans felt that it was an absolute shame for Overwatch 2 to demand phone numbers from younger players. And truly, people hardly need anyone else demanding and collecting their data these days. The move should have been planned out for a more successful and honest roll out, regardless. Most players were blindsided when they launched the game.

Call of Duty’s PC fanbase is already familiar with the phone number requirements, thanks to Warzone. As a result, existing Warzone players that already verified their account won’t need to take further action to play Modern Warfare II and Warzone 2.0. But PC fans remain frustrated that the core series will adopt the same rules.

The PC platform is especially suited for cheating any game, so requiring phone numbers could potentially help. But there are so many alternatives to circumvent measures like this, it may not make enough of an impact. SMS seems like more of a deterrent than a solution, but that remains to be seen.
