Dark Life: Excalibur, an upcoming fantasy adventure indie from developer Zero Studios and publisher Gammera Nest, has just released a brand-new trailer for PlayStation. It features a blend of cinematics and gameplay, as well as narration that sets up the premise and world.

Dark Life: Excalibur does not currently have a release date or window. It will be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as PlayStation 5, where you can wishlist the game now.

Today’s trailer has a fairly grim tone, dark fantasy creatures, and familiar action that should all bring Dark Souls to mind. According to Dark Life: Excalibur’s PlayStation product page, the devs confirm they were heavily inspired by Hidetaka Miyazaki. The title “Dark Life” even feels like a pun of sorts.

There have also been countless adaptations of the Excalibur legend, and even the classic 80’s film Excalibur had some rugged battles. So, fans of the tale should be fine with Dark Life: Excalibur’s tone and gameplay, if not surprised by them.

As an indie, the graphics in today’s trailer are totally forgivable, and the environments actually look quite impressive. Though gloomy, the medieval scenery seems polished and intriguing. The world of Dark Life: Excalibur certainly seems worth exploring.

The most compelling feature in Dark Life: Excalibur is probably the titular weapon itself. The new PlayStation page reveals that Excalibur “can build its own build”, possibly suggesting that the hero and blade can upgrade differently and form synergies together. It’d be nice if Excalibur were truly its own character.

Dark Life: Excalibur should interest fans of the genre on theme alone, but its features and world also seem expansive for such a small dev team.
