Dolphin Spirit – Ocean Mission, an upcoming educational adventure game from developer Magic Pockets and publisher Microids, has finally released its first gameplay teaser.

Dolphin Spirit – Ocean Mission is slated to launch on September 28th, 2023. Curiously, today’s teaser was accompanied by a new tweet that distinguishes the US release for October 17th, 2023, instead. The game will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox.

Launch bonuses will include two special postcards and a strip of stickers. You can watch the first gameplay trailer on Microids’ YouTube channel:

It’s often difficult to balance fun with a story that’s legitimately informative. The Assassin’s Creed franchise has always balanced this out surprisingly well, and only yesterday Assassin’s Creed Mirage revealed a History of Baghdad feature designed with knowledgeable experts.

Dolphin Spirit – Ocean Mission has a touch a fantasy, which is helpful, and the animal interactions look very heartwarming or cute. There’s a definite sense of personality in the setting, and the game’s Steam page mentions that players can learn more about the folklore.

However, Dolphin Spirit – Ocean Mission is aimed towards younger audiences, and the result feels a bit like standard educational fare. The graphics aren’t quite up to par, and casual players who are a bit older might have trouble responding, unless they’re animal enthusiasts.

Still, today’s teaser is only the first. There’s plenty of time until fall, and hopefully more gameplay trailers will emphasize the cultural aspects, which are genuinely interesting.

Rescuing animals sells itself, but it’d be nice to learn about more of the mechanics, like photo mode, which is only briefly revealed in today’s teaser. The game has potential, especially with its sense of authenticity, but education works best with satisfying gameplay.
