Aeterna Lucis, an upcoming sequel to 2021’s hit metroidvania platformer Aeterna Noctis, has just been announced for 2024 in a new tweet from developer and publisher Aeternum Game Studios. A smaller release window has not been confirmed at this time. Today’s announcement included a brief teaser, which you can view here:
Aeterna Noctis is an unusual hybrid game that carefully separated a plain metroidvania mode from its “Noctis Mode”, which then adds highly challenging puzzles and platforming.
Aeterna Noctis has become one of the most notoriously difficult games in the genre, and on the Steam product page, even the devs warn players to avoid Noctis Mode if they aren’t seeking extreme challenges that could “ruin the experience”.
However, Aeterna Noctis also boasts level designs which are very clever, and feature stunning hand-drawn artwork. The presentation is absolutely gorgeous, full of compelling environments and characters. The game released last year, so it’ll be a three-year wait for the sequel, Aeterna Lucis, which is expected to continue down the same path.
Today’s teaser trailer includes the same signature art style and engaging music as the previous installment. So, it looks very promising, although it’s clear that very little could be revealed this early on. Especially for a sequel that seems to be hand-drawn, again.
Aeterna Lucis was announced alongside a brief 2022 showcase from Aeternum Game Studios, which ran earlier today. The showcase included a glimpse of the upcoming DLC for Aeterna Noctis, “Pit of the Damned”, which is due in early 2023.
Notably, there was also an announcement for Summum Aeterna, a prequel game to Aeterna Noctis. It is scheduled to roll out in late 2023 for PC, Xbox, PlayStation and the Nintendo Switch.
