Afterlife VR, a VR horror adventure set in a mental hospital from developer and publisher Split Light Studio, will officially release for the PS VR2 on April 19th, 2023.
In an amusing blunder, PlayStation rolled out a “release date trailer” that did not include the titular date. Social accounts for PlayStation and the devs did not immediately address the mistake or add an actual date. In fact, the trailer description and the PS store still haven’t included it either, at this time.
It took nearly an hour before Perp Games, the publisher, was finally able to confirm the release date for the port. It’s unfortunate, and perhaps a little embarrassing, but at least fans ultimately got an answer.
Afterlife VR originally launched in September 2022 and is currently available on PC via Steam. There is no word on support for other VR platforms. Here’s the full release date announcement from Perp Games’ official Twitter feed:
Afterlife VR has been met with positive fan responses since launch. It’s sort of a simple haunted house experience, with lots of jump scares and moody environments. But the puzzle mechanics have received a lot of praise for their balancing and creativity.
Judging by the trailers, the characters in Afterlife VR are not supported by strong visuals. They aren’t especially detailed, the art design is a little uninspired, and the animations seem weak.
Overall, it’s clear that Afterlife VR offers playful horror that’s best suited for an immersive VR experience. It should excel on the PS VR2, which offers some considerable technological improvements. It would also be nice to see Afterlife VR show up on PS Plus sometime, since it feels like the right kind of breezy horror game for the service.
