Age of Darkness: Final Stand, the fantasy and survival RTS from developer PlaySide and publisher Team17, has just unveiled a prologue trailer for its long-awaited campaign mode. The trailer is fully cinematic, establishing lore instead of showcasing related gameplay.
Age of Darkness: Final Stand is available now in Early Access on PC. The new campaign, “Flames of Retribution”, will arrive on April 19th, 2023. Here’s the full prologue trailer from Team17’s YouTube channel:
Age of Darkness: Final Stand first launched in 2021, so it’s been a long wait for a dedicated campaign mode. The core game, which is still in Early Access right now, is built on straightforward tower defense and swarm survival.
Many fans have drawn comparisons to They Are Billions, which shares many of the same mechanics. But reviews have remained largely positive over the years.
Age of Darkness: Final Stand has a very impressive swarm volume, boasting thousands at a time. Also, its visuals are undeniably crisp, especially with so many characters on screen. The heroes and enemies have enough personality, and the environments have some terrific textures and lighting.
These discernible features make it easier to enjoy swarm survival gameplay, which can sometimes become needlessly messy. Age of Darkness: Final Stand plays well despite some flaws here and there, but it still feels incomplete, because it is. Age of Darkness: Final Stand has a world worth exploring, and the introduction of a campaign should help distinguish it.
Note that the campaign is expected to feature “three different Acts”, and only the first two will be available later this month. Acts I and II are going to add seven missions and new cinematics, which is a decent amount of content.
