Age of Wonders 4, the latest installment in the hit 4X strategy series from developer Triumph Studios and publisher Paradox Interactive, will officially release its first DLC Dragon Dawn on June 20th, 2023. According to a new tweet, it will include a free Wyvern Update based on fan feedback.
The DLC will add many new features, including the ability to summon and become the titular dragons. An official blog post with full DLC details reveals there will also be new Dragon Rulers, a new Lizardfolk appearance, units that evolve, and a realm about warring elder dragons.
Age of Wonders 4 launched just last month, and is available now on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. You can watch an extensive first look at the upcoming DLC on the Age of Wonders 4 YouTube channel:
The first look that was released today is surprisingly in-depth, showcasing all of the major mechanics and visuals that fans can expect. It’ll also take you two full hours to review everything. But it’s clear that the dragon theme is used to its full potential.
The creatures themselves have extraordinary table presence, despite some simple animations, and they seem to blend in nicely with the existing meta. It is made immediately clear that the Dragon Dawn DLC is packed with content.
That level of volume isn’t just satisfying for any game, but also a cornerstone of 4X titles. The genre is too layered for DLC that simply adds tweaks, cosmetics, or one shiny new character. There should be enough here to justify some renewed interest from fans, and its classic fantasy theme may be more accessible for newcomers.
The Ashen War is a particularly neat addition, where the conflicts are not black and white. The sides of “balance and hope” set up some very compelling lore.
