Panache Digital Games, the studio known for the well-received survival game Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, joined in the April Fools’ Day fun with a lighthearted announcement. On April 1st, the company revealed a shift in focus to “the financial sector of NFT of space hominids” in a tweet. This playful comment alludes to the popular but controversial world of NFTs and the trend of extravagant NFT projects featuring humanlike animal imagery.

We all know about NFTs and how they’re invading the game space. There are mixed feelings about the concept of selling unique in-game items on blockchain marketplaces. There are also worries about the environment and how it might be seen as exploitative. Panache Digital Games seems to be joking about this in their April Fools’ tweet.

The mention of “space hominids” is thought to be a reference to popular NFT collections like the Bored Ape Yacht Club. This club is full of stylized cartoon primates. These collections have attracted significant financial speculation, with individual NFTs occasionally selling for very high prices. By basing their fake business shift on a similarly extravagant idea, Panache Digital Games playfully mocks the perceived absurdity of certain NFT ventures.

Panache Digital Games is unlikely to seriously pursue space hominid NFTs. However, their April Fools’ tweet brings attention to the broader conversation and the suspicion often associated with NFT-related projects. I am just glad they didn’t dash my dreams with a joke Ancestors 2 Announcement.
