Pacer is an anti-gravity racing title that brought classic arcade gameplay to Steam in 2020 after being developed and published by R8 Games. However, a new post on the Steam page seems to state that the IP has been sold to a new developer who seems to be planning some sort of “Metaverse” future for the series.
This was first noticed by a user on the gaming forum ResetEra, who pointed out the new blog post on Pacer‘s Steam page. It’s a very short entry, stating that the Pacer universe is expected to continue with a “new lease of life, with Long Tale Games stepping in to steer the ship.” The standard version of the game, being changed to Pacer: Classic, will remain unchanged, but fans are unsure about the franchise’s future.
Long Tale Games bills itself as a platform for games, “turning ideas into immersive experiences!” In the news post on the publisher’s website, they state that it “plans to use it as a platform for further development of the game universe.” There isn’t much information given outside of this besides Long Tale stating that the series and the idea for the series are expected to continue.
The community seems uneasy, but Long Tale states on its website that the team has a mission statement of “experimenting with variants of rebuilding and relaunching games.” Later the company makes clear that these involve web3, a web of decentralized marketplaces on the blockchain, usually either NFTs or a type of cryptocurrency.
With the developer planning to leave Pacer: Classic in its base form, it seems that fans will at least be able to return to the title that they fell in love with.
