Baladins, an upcoming choose your own adventure game from developer Seed by Seed, will officially be published by Armor Games Studios. Inspired by RPGs, it will feature turn-based exploration, different story outcomes, and online coop.
A release window hasn’t been confirmed, but Baladins will be available on Steam, where fans can wishlist the game now. Here’s the big publishing announcement from Armor Games Studios’ feed:
Armor Games Studios has published a wide variety of indie games, and although none of them have created any real kind of viral buzz, many of their titles have been received well.
The publisher is probably best known for Islets, The Last Stand: Aftermath, and Bear and Breakfast, the last of which we reviewed last year with a solid rating. So, Armor Games Studios should be considered a reliable champion for successful content. And all of the footage that’s been released so far from Baladins seems to support that.
Baladins succeeded through the Kickstarter campaign process, and then released another gameplay trailer after getting fully funded. You can review the trailer on Seed by Seed’s YouTube channel here:
The devs infused Baladins with a very charming sense of humor, partly parodying RPGs while enjoying its themes. For example, the premise itself subverts the epic expectations of an RPG adventure, since the heroes’ goal is actually simple entertainment.
The mechanics look friendly, and they’re designed with intentionally short play sessions. This subverts the RPG tradition of lengthy quests that force players to wait until the weekend for a proper experience.
But there’s still an emphasis on cooperation, narrative, and worldbuilding, so the true RPG flavor isn’t lost. Baladins could be a very playful and creative twist, which should please fans of the genre. And the art design is so colorful and cute, akin to LEGO and Paper Mario.
