Asterogues, an upcoming indie blending bullet hell and shoot ’em up from solo developer pipotchi600 and publisher Freedom Games, has released a brand-new devlog. The video features gameplay, as well as narration explaining the world, mechanics, and characters.

Asterogues doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s expected to launch this year. You can watch the full devlog on the developer’s official YouTube channel here:

According to today’s devlog, Asterogues will be the developer’s first commercial game. It has been under way for some time now, releasing a playable demo last year, and announcing the partnership with Freedom Games back in November 2022.

Today’s devlog smartly and directly addresses how saturated the genre currently is, and it dedicates a full segment on what exactly makes Asterogues different. And the core mechanic is very clever, wherein each playable character “uses enemy bullets against them”.

It’s such a promising and simple premise, with enormous potential for strategy. The gravitational pull ability that’s showcased throughout today’s video already looks very engaging. It should provide ample opportunity for unique timing and movement skills.

The art design should look familiar for these genres, but the characters themselves are conceptually neat and have recognizable silhouettes.

Also, the general mythology behind the narrative is very interesting, and it has an unexpected, subtle sense of humor. The world feels very much worth exploring, and the cosmic setting should offer a lot of freedom to get even stranger or grander. But its planetary themes also make it seem more grounded and unique than comparable fantasy or horror titles.

The developer concludes with a tease that there will be more information on items and enemy classes. Since the player’s actions are so directly tied to enemy mechanics, it’ll be very important to see how unique they are.
