Mr. Run and Jump, an upcoming 2D precision platformer from Graphite Labs and Atari, has just been announced with a new gameplay trailer. The game was originally built for the Atari 2600, and is now coming to PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox.
Although the new trailer only says the game is “coming soon”, Atari’s official product page for Mr. Run and Jump currently has a release date set for July 25th, 2023. You can watch the full announcement trailer on the Atari YouTube channel:
Mr. Run and Jump has a title that puts a playful tone front and center. At first glance, it mostly seems like a simple dose of nostalgia. The music, obstacles, and gameplay are very traditional. The characters and worlds feel a little abstract and cute, though. The worlds look distinguishable enough, and use their retro visuals in some unexpected ways.
It is also entertaining to see old school ideas in such a tidy presentation. There are many modern sensibilities, both in Mr. Run and Jump’s powerful graphics and colors, as well as smooth movement. The animation looks gorgeous, and the levels do seem to naturally encourage speed. The sound effects are also crisp and creative, both relying and elaborating on classic retro sounds.
A lot of the marketing is really trying to appeal to speedrunners, but the game will also offer Dynamic Assistance, which allows players to define their own difficulty level. It would be ideal for Atari to mention that a little more, since there are plenty of casual gamers who enjoy an arcade cabinet experience now and then.
Atari widely expanded its gaming library last month, acquiring over 100 titles, so fans should definitely expect to hear about more ports and updates following Mr. Run and Jump.
