Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, an upcoming open world action and adventure game from Ubisoft in collaboration with James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment, has finally released a world premiere trailer. It includes a combination of stunning cinematics and first-person gameplay, featuring an original Na’vi character exploring the completely new Western Frontier area of Pandora.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is slated to launch on December 7th, 2023. It will be available on PC, Luna, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. You can watch today’s official premiere trailer on the Ubisoft YouTube channel:
Avatar: The Way of Water was yet another smash hit, with just as much spectacle and heart as fans of the original could have hoped for. It even won over those who were critical of the first film, with a more relatable family dynamic and compelling elaborations on the lore, which prove just how flexible the world of Avatar can really be.
As a result, expectations for consistent quality are going to be very high for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. When the first Avatar film came out, its tie-in game was critically panned.
Fortunately, Frontiers already looks intelligent, expansive, and absolutely gorgeous. The first-person perspective was a smart move, and reflects the immersive goals of Avatar, which originally ushered in another era of 3D releases (though none compared).
The overall sense of freedom to explore and interact in Frontiers of Pandora is truly impressive, and probably more fluid than Far Cry, though some familiar Ubisoft mechanics will likely come into play.
Either way, it’s a relief to see that the narrative approach is building on existing themes and story threads in unexpected ways. There is a cinematic and inventive edge to Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, which should intrigue fans on its own. It has the potential to be equally thoughtful, emotional, and action-packed.
