There is good news for modders and console players of Baldur’s Gate 3. The game’s developer, Larian Studios, has officially announced plans to include built-in support for mods. This highly requested feature is supposed to solve the current problems of mods breaking with each update and being less accessible for console players.

In a series of tweets and a Discord post, Larian’s Director of Publishing, Michael Douse, and Senior Community Strategist WombatMedic announced that they understand players’ frustration when updates make their favorite mods unusable. To tackle this issue, Larian has been developing a comprehensive, cross-platform plan for mod support, set to be released later this year.

The new plan promises several important improvements. First, official mod management will be implemented, making it easier for players to handle mods and updates. Second, the system will be cross-platform, allowing mods to work smoothly on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. This is a notable advancement, particularly as console modding options have been limited in the past.

We are working on official mod support, and have been for a while. We want the very best for you, which includes establishing a pipeline that lets mod authors release their mods across different platforms. Together with the platform holders, we are working on making this a reality, and are forming a team to support mod curation. We’re aiming to offer modding support for things like classes, UI, customisation, spells, and certain assets and game mechanics. As this is no small task, we hope to introduce the initial stages of modding support in our next big patch, which is still several months away. Frustrated as you might be now, we’re keen to work with you on this – and have plans to reach out to popular mod authors to talk further and work together to avoid issues in the future.

The next major patch is anticipated to introduce the initial stage of mod support, which is expected to be released “several months away.” Larian has hinted at supporting mods for classes, UI, customization, spells, and certain assets and game mechanics. This opens the door to various possibilities, from new character classes to immersive gameplay adjustments.

It’s not clear how this will all work, but it sounds awesome. I love using mods, and being able to use them on a console is a great thing.
