Blizzard’s Battle.net platform experienced an apparent Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack today, which caused disruptions to popular games such as Overwatch, Call of Duty, and World of Warcraft. The company’s Customer Support Twitter account confirmed the situation, stating, “We are currently experiencing a DDoS attack, which may result in high latency and disconnections for some players. We are actively working to mitigate this issue.”

The DDoS attack led to increased latency and disconnection issues for many players, leaving the fan bases of these popular titles frustrated. A DDoS attack is a type of cyber-attack where multiple systems, usually infected with malware, are used to flood a targeted system, such as a server, with an overwhelming amount of traffic. The goal of such an attack is to disrupt the normal functioning of the system, making it difficult or impossible for users to access the targeted service.

This isn’t the first time that this has happened recently, as there was another attack on April 12th which caused similar issues. It looks like for whatever reason, Blizzard and Battle.net are being specifically targeted at the moment. Hopefully, players will be able to resume play sooner rather than later.
